Now, more than ever, people are exercising as a way to stay fit in both mind and spirit. USATF – Long Island encourages a healthy lifestyle by promoting Track & Field as a sport for people of all ages. USATF – LI provides many opportunities for Masters Athletes (35 years old and over) to participate. Masters compete in 5 year age groups (35 – 39, 40 – 44, etc…).

Whether you are just starting out, a recreational runner or competing in World Championships, there is a USATF – LI event for you. USATF – LI organizes several track meets throughout the winter, spring and summer where athletes can run, jump and throw against others their own age. Also, in cooperation with USATF sanctioned races, USATF – LI holds both a road racing and cross-country grand prix where athletes compete in 5 year age groups, (Masters begins at age 40) and earn points based on their performances. To see prior results for track & field, road running and cross-country please click on the links located on the left.

In addition to the physical improvement in their lives, Masters Athletes enjoy the camaraderie of their fellow competitors. Many Masters Athletes join clubs. Clubs offer training tips and partners as well as providing motivation and support. There are also many opportunities for the clubs to compete as teams against each other. There are many clubs on Long Island for road and distance runners as well as some clubs that specialize in track & field. For a listing of some of the clubs on Long Island click on the Related Links tab on the left. You can also find members of these clubs at most running events on Long Island.

2009 Highlights
Several Long Island Masters athletes received recognition at the 2009 USATF Annual meeting held in Indianapolis in early December.
We Are Athlete’s Joan Gerold was nominated in the 60-64 year old age group as that group’s runner of the year. Joan is not yet well known nationally, but that will change as she keeps performing like she did in 2009.
Our favorite 90 year old, Bill Benson was nominated in his age group. Bill was also a Phidippides Award winner in 2009. Look for Bill in 2010!!!
Kathy Martin was named both the Track and Field Athlete and Long Distance Runner of the Year for age 55-59. In addition she was 3rd for Master’s Athlete of the Year behind Colleen De Reuck and Joan Benoit Samuelson!! Quite a field!!
