Long Island "Places 6th" at Pan American Junior Championships

The Long Island delegation at the Pan American Junior Championships collected six medals - one gold, four silver and two bronze - over the weekend in Medellin, Colombia.

The silver medals were gathered by former North Shore star Brianna Nerud (now at Syracuse), who was second in the steeplechase (in 10:46.88); Friends Academy graduate Kelsey Margey (now at Villanova), who fought through a thunderstorm in the 1,500m run (finishing in 4:38.84, behind Julie Zrinyi of Canada); and St. Anthony's grad Olicia Williams (now at Baylor) , who took second in the 800m run and claimed gold on the dominating Team USA 4x400m relay.

"Going out I wanted to place myself in the front and go easy and hold on," said Williams. "Then I started thinking I gotta do this for my team and make the podium. It was kind of nerve-wracking, and I was more nervous than at the NCAA meet." There was no such pressure with speedy teammates Robin Reynolds, Kendall Baisden and Courtney Okolo on the 4x400m relay. That foursome crossed the line in 3:36.48 - more than five seconds ahead of runner-up Canada.

The bronze collection went to Chaminade graduate Thomas Awad (now at Penn), who ran the 5k in 14:55.53, and Bay Shore graduate Jessica Gelibert (now at Coastal Carolina), who was third in the 400m hurdles in 58.20. Gelibert was competing for Haiti while the others all represented the United States.
