3 women from the Northport Running Club competed in the USATF Masters Indoor Track & Field Championships this past weekend in Albuquerque, NM. Roxanne Brockner, Vicki Fox and Kathy Martin tallied enough points (83) between them to finish 8th among all teams. The teams that finished ahead of them had dozens of competitors.
Kathy Martin, the 2016 USATF Long Island Female Masters Track Athlete of the Year, competing in her first Indoor National Championship since turning 65 years old swept the distance events setting 2 world records and one American record. On Friday Kathy set an American record in the 3000m with a time of 11:53.32. She followed that up on Saturday by narrowly missing breaking 6 minutes for the mile, running a World record 6:01.46. On Sunday she broke the World record for 800m, winning the race in 2:44.35.
Roxanne Brockner and Vicki Fox also were National Champions. Roxanne won the W50 400m race in 1:05.83. Vicki defended her W55 Pentathlon title by scoring a personal best, and USATF Long Island record, 3175 points. They were not content with just one medal however. Both placed second in the 60m hurdles and 200m. Vicki, the 2016 USATF Long Island Female Masters Field athlete of the Year also earned silver medals in the Long Jump and High Jump as well as a bronze medal in the 400m.
On the men’s side, the women’s teammate Dale Drueckhammer, the 2016 USATF Long Island Male Masters Track Athlete of the Year, picked up points in the distance events with a 5th place finish in the M55 mile and 6th place finishes in the 400m and 800m. Joe Cordero also excelled in the distance events. Joe took the National Championship in the M75 300m race and 3rd in both the mile and 800m.
