All individuals who wish to apply for a coaching position in a NY State public high school and do not hold a current NYS teaching certificate must obtain a Temporary Coaching License (TCL) in the sport they wish to coach. This TCL is sport specific and must be renewed each year until a Permanent Coaching License is obtained.

Step 2: Complete all of the courses below;
Step 3: Fingerprinting Clearance Call the BOCES office 516-396-2488 to make an appointment.
Step 4: Print and fill out the TCL Cover Sheet. There are two pathways to permanent certification – BUT BOTH PATHWAYS ARE THE SAME FOR THE FIRST TWO YEARS OF TCL’s. Pathway 1 involves taking three classes in years 3, 4 and 5 of the Temporary License. Pathway 2 involved taking online NFHS courses in years 3, 4 and 5, but also requires an internship that must be approved and signed-off on. Either way, you do not need to worry about this in your first two years of having your TCL, you can decide later.
Step 5: Applying to a school district for a coaching position. You will submit to the school that you are applying, a packet that includes:
Step 6: The school district will then issue a Superintendent’s Statement and send all paperwork to the state or regional office for review.
Step 7: Hopefully, your paperwork in complete, your license is issued and you get the coaching position!
